If you’re like many couples, family is important to you and to your partner. Family has been involved in many of your milestones and life accomplishments. So it is perfectly natural that you would want them to play a part in your proposal idea. Wanting to have family there sounds great but there are lot of things to keep in mind. But what are the best ways to get family members involved while still keeping the proposal a surprise? Lucky for you, we have some great proposal planning tips to involve family in your proposal.
Signs of Love
Family would love to be there to watch your proposal in first hand. There are millions of ways to propose and some of the best ways to propose would be to do it outdoors. If you’re planning an outdoors proposal and want family members present, think about having those family members hold up signs with the words “Will You Marry Me?” on them. This could be at a final location such as a beach, park, or maybe even your back yard.
Does that sound too simple and you want something more in depth? Then how about you line up your family along a path (like next to trees in a beautiful park) and have them display personalized love notes from you to your partner. She’ll be extra emotional reading the displays of love and seeing a family member holding them for her.
IMPORTANT RULE: Just make sure that your partner doesn’t see the signs beforehand!
A Family Gathering
Ok so you know you want family to be involved but you don’t know how to come up with a backstory to get your partner there? Well, one of the best ways to do that is to have your family create the backstory for you. Maybe it can be one of your cousin’s birthday that’s being held in your backyard or maybe one of your family members got a “promotion” and the family wants to surprise them with a cake.
Another thing to keep in mind, if you want to have a private proposal but still want your family to be a part of your big day, think about hosting a post-engagement party. Fly grandma in from out of state and make sure your partner’s cousins can make it. The larger the group of loved ones, the better! Lead your partner to the party after you’ve proposed for another amazing surprise – just keep a tissue handy.
Photos are Forever
If your family cannot physically be there, one of the best ways to have them be a part of the proposal is through a scrapbook. Have pictures there showing your parents, and your partner’s parents, at their wedding day and now. Perhaps even have them pose the same way they did for their wedding photographs. At the end of the scrapbook, you can have a photo of you and your partner with a blank spot next to it and a caption underneath stating that it is meant for a photo of the two of you, years after your own wedding day.
An alternative to this is to have a video showing a slideshow of these photos. You can rent out a venue space and have a projector and screen ready. You can pretty it up with blankets, pillows, flowers, and candles. You show her the slideshow with “your” song and your partner will be sure to say “YES!”.
Think Vintage
Consider using items from loved ones in your proposal that are meaningful to you and your partner. Wear your father’s cufflinks or your mother’s pearls for the occasion. Perhaps you could propose using a ring that has been passed down through the family for generations.
For the perfect proposal, be sure to purchase a ring box from Ring Stash, a sleek and compact ring box that will keep your treasured heirloom safe and concealed until the big moment comes.
Consider the Kids
If you and your partner have children together or maybe there’s a young child in your family that is very close to one of you two then consider having them be a part of your proposal. Doing this will make your proposal memory even more special. You can do this in many ways. For example, you can have the child present the ring box to your partner as you’re on bended knee. An adorable way of incorporating kids is to incorporate them directly into the proposal. You can have them have wear shirts that have the proposal message written on it. If you’re having a photographer, just be sure to let the photographer know ahead of time what you’re planning.
