If you are planning a proposal this summer, there is so much to consider right? Where is the perfect proposal location, what is the best summer proposal idea, etc. But if you are going to plan things out so perfectly, you want to have photos of the proposal that are equally as perfect, right?
That is why I interviewed Petronella from the award-winning international photo studio Petronella Photography. We have worked with Petronella on hundreds of NYC proposal ideas. Petronella specializes in helping multicultural couples celebrate their love in a modern way and today, she is sharing 5 tips to get the perfect summer proposal shots.
Tip #1: Avoid Harsh Lighting
If proposing outside with little to no shade, avoid proposing between noon – 2pm light unless it’s a cloudy day. The light is the harshest, and produces unflattering shadows. While your significant other might say yes, the walk to and from the specific location might not be the best experience and the photos might just be ok. And who wants just “ok” photos after planning the perfect proposal?
Tip #2: Don’t Be Green
If your proposal location is mostly surrounded by a lot of greenery (think Central Park), then take notes! If you are proposing in this setting on a super bright day or high noon timing, it might mean that the bright light will bounce off the greenery and make you and your significant appear green-ish in the photos! YUCK!
If you have to propose at this time or your day ends up being super sunny, opt for a location with a little green in the background. If the ground & surrounding area has light colors like cement, slate or grey or whitish walls that is even better. If it’s a cloudy day, you won’t need to worry so much about the greenery.
Tip #3: Be Prepared
The proposal is short, but the proposal photos are not! Pack some water & snacks for your significant other for after the proposal. It’ll show your thoughtfulness and give your partner a sneak peek on what it is going to be like to be with you forever. AWE!!!
Tip #4: No Sweat!
Trust me on this one…If you sweat a lot, bring a small cloth to wipe off any sweat so you look good in the photos. You don’t want to have this perfectly planned proposal, your partner looks gorgeous and elated, and you are dripping in sweat.
Tip #5: Look At The Big Picture
Consider what it will take to get to the location. Next, think about what your significant other might be wearing (eg: high heels on the beach). If you think your partner won’t wear clothes or shoes suitable to the proposal environment, pack a bag with those items. You could bring a comfy pair of shoes for significant other for example.
