How To Create The Perfect Sunset Proposal

We have been planning marriage proposals for over 10 years and if it is one thing that I know for sure, it is that people love to propose at sunset. And why wouldn’t they right? There are so many reasons to propose at sunset. When you propose at sunset, the orange and pink hues that light the sky really add to the romantic ambiance for your special moment. And when you get your proposal photos back (because you wouldn’t dare propose without hiring a photographer would you?), the photos will be ten times more amazing with the perfect sunset in the background.

Now for those of you that don’t know, this week is Capture The Sunset week. So to honor this special week, I have decided to share with you how to have the perfect sunset proposal. I have also included photos of some of the amazing sunset proposals we have planned. The photo above is one of my favorite proposals we planned in New York City in 2018. We staged a flower cart which was filled with her favorite flowers and when Suril stopped to buy her a flower, the flower vendor told her the whole cart was for her! Suril proposed with the most epic sunset in the background which made for the perfect NYC proposal idea.

Step 1: Google What Time Sunset Is

Our clients always come to us and say they want a sunset proposal. But what you really want is to propose during the “golden hour.” The “golden hour” is actually about an hour before sunset. Some people don’t know this but you can Google what time sunset is in advance. You simply type in “sunset in NYC on August 23rd” for example, and it tells you the exact sunset time. Book your proposal an hour or a half hour before that time.

This proposal below that we planned in San Francisco is exactly what the goal here. When planned correctly, you can have the perfect sunset combined with a beautiful iconic structure setting the stage for the ultimate proposal.

Step 2: Choose A Location Where The Sun Sets

We all know that the sun sets in the West. So when you choose where you are going to propose, if you are looking for the perfect sunset, you need to choose a venue that has a view of the West. You also want to make sure there is nothing blocking your perfect sunset. For example, if you propose in a city with a ton of skyscrapers, you are going to want to make sure the view is not blocked.

The proposal we planned below in Oahu turned out beautiful! A beautiful sunset, radiant orchids, and the ocean equal a perfect marriage proposal. Beaches, parks, and rooftops are normally really great locations for a sunset.

Step 3: Consider Crowds

When you are planning your sunset proposal, you have to think about crowds. Sunsets draw crowds and the last thing you want to do is plan this perfect proposal in your mind, and then arrive to find a hundred tourists running around everywhere. Do some research and try to find some locations with views of the sunset that do not seem overcrowded. Then, go visit the location on the same day of the week and time that you plan on proposing so that you can see how busy it gets. An easy solution to this problem is of course, to rent out a private venue.

Step 4: Position Your Vendors Properly

I have seen people propose with the perfect sunset but because they didn’t position the vendors properly, you couldn’t even tell by looking at the photos. Now if you hire a Proposal Planner, you won’t have to worry about any of this because we take care of every detail for you. But if you go at it alone, make sure that any decor you include in your proposal is placed on the West side and the photographer is placed to the East. That way, the perfect sunset that you planned everything around will show up in your proposal photos.

Where you propose is only a small part of creating the perfect proposal idea. What is even more important is that the proposal speaks to who you really are as a couple and that it is executed perfectly. No pressure right?
