Top 5 Believable Backstories to Get your Partner to the Proposal

Sometimes you can have the most gorgeous plan in the word, but the hardest part is HOW to get your sweetheart there.  If you’re planning a surprise, you don’t want to ruin it by simply saying “meet me at this location looking nice and fancy.”  They will immediately catch on and know what you are planning. You really have to try and catch them by surprise.

But how? You ask…

It’s your lucky day! We’ve got a few scenarios in mind that will discreetly bring your partner over to your ideal engagement location without spoiling the surprise!  Read along for all the best tips brought to you by our team of expert Proposal Planners.

The Fancy Dinner Proposal

Okay, hear me out. It needs to be NICE. If you want them to wear something nice, do their hair, and be picture perfect, you need to hype this up as an amazing date night.  Make reservations for somewhere fancy. If you want to propose in the restaurant, wonderful! Most nice restaurants are really accommodating and helpful for an event like this. They may even offer to decorate your table.

If you don’t really want to eat at this fancy spot, just tell your partner you made the reservation but want to meet up at X location first and then you’ll drive together. Or maybe that you want to pick them up first and then take them to the special spot.

You’ll get them at your ideal location looking absolutely amazing and perfect for a memorable night!

The Sunset Excuse

Tell your partner you want to meet them  somewhere to watch the sunset.  This can be a perfect excuse to get them to go somewhere where you have some sort of outdoor setup waiting for them. This is also a great idea if you want to do something crazy like have an airplane flying overhead with a banner asking them to marry you!

Super bonus: Golden hour (an hour before sunset) is THE most romantic time of day to propose.  So you are going to get amazing photos and have the perfect proposal excuse with this one.

The Work Function Proposal

Nothing like the classic work function proposal! No really, this one works so well, especially if you can make it really believable. With this backstory, you are getting your partner to the proposal location by saying you have a work function that they need to attend with you.

First things first, your partner shouldn’t know anyone at your job that they could possibly confirm this with. It works if your work life is totally separate from your personal life.

Another thing to consider is how believable it would truly be. Does your work only do functions for Christmas? Then a middle of summer function isn’t entirely believable.  However, in this example, if you’re planning to propose during Christmastime, this is a PERFECT backstory!

Your partner will dress up accordingly for the occasion, you’ll swing by to pick them up (or meet them at a given location) and you’ll both be ready for your proposal. We love the work function excuse because it’s so believable!

The Friends Meet Up Proposal

This one is awesome no matter what you want to plan. If you want to dress up, go casual, do an outdoor event, or indoor dinner, “meeting up with friends” lets you get away with almost anything.

One way to do this is to actually get the friends involved! Tell them that you are planning to propose and let them in on the fun.  Create a group text with everyone who’s “meeting up” and chat about what to wear, what time to be there, and any other details. This ensures your partner will show up wearing a great outfit and ready to have fun.

If having their nails manicure ready for an engagement is important to them, get the friends in on that part. They can have their nails done before the big event and it wouldn’t even seem suspicious!

If you don’t actually want friends involved, that’s ok too.  It is still the perfect proposal excuse.

The At Home Date Night Proposal

So you don’t want to go out to propose- no problem.  Tell your partner you want to have a date night in. Get all dressed up, and tell them to come on over at a certain time. When they arrive, have everything set up to lead them to the perfect proposal spot.

This one is simple and easy but can be oh so romantic! Rose petals, tea lights, white or gold balloons… There are so many ways to make this intimate, special and memorable.
